3 miles in 22:30! Of course Steve kept up that pace for double the distance (he’s actually hoping to run that pace for the entire marathon) but he’s been running for longer than me. :) [...] Well, week five of training has come and gone and what a fantastic week! I felt great after all my runs this past week. It started out last Tuesday with a short 3 mile run which I did in record time (for me). I decided that I’d throw some ‘speed’ work into the mix (which is supposed to help in the long run) so I finished the 3 miles in 23:30 – significantly faster than the 25:30 that I normally take. On Wednesday I opted to do my 5 mile run at my marathon pace, which I’m hoping will be 8:30 per mile. That had me finishing the 5 miles in 42:30. [...] I only had to do a short 3 miles today, but I felt really good about it. Completed the 3 miles in just under 23:30. Started out at 7.5 mph for the first mile, increased to 7.6 mph for the second mile and then to 7.8 mph for the last mile. I felt REALLY good after the run too. Perhaps I’m actually getting somewhere with this training stuff… I’d like to get down to somewhere around 20-21 minutes for a 3 mile run by the end of this training. [...] So much for my training so far, it was pretty much non existent in week 2. The only running I managed last week was the long run on Saturday and I didn’t even get the whole 7 miles in. Week one started ok but when I got around to Thursday I skipped that run for some reason. Can’t remember why now. The weekend of week one happened to coincide with that last weekend before we moved out of our old place and therefore there was no running for me. If I had been *really* devoted to the training program I likely would have squeezed in a run but I was already starting to feel run down and with all the packing still to do, it fell by the wayside. [...] Today is the official start to my 18 week marathon training program. After running with Dave (and Steve) for the last 13 weeks or so, this week should feel pretty easy. Dave and I are going to follow the novice program by Hal Higdon, which is the same program I used last year before spraining my ankle late in the training routine. Hopefully this year will be better. At least I’ll have someone to train with on those days when I really don’t feel like running. [...] And the running continues. I skipped Tuesday but ran last night. Five miles in 44 and a half minutes. A slower pace than I normally run but it’ll do. I’m really losing motivation to run these days so it’ll be nice to start running with the boys again soon. I have a feeling the two moves and the time in between will be a killer to my running routine but we’ll see. I’ll be living closer to Lawson so maybe I can do some running with him for motivation. [...] Seems like a while since I’ve posted about running. In actuality I guess it’s only been a week. Anyways, I’m still running. Did an hour outside on Saturday in Bowmanville. We were down visiting Amy’s sisters (and their husbands of course) mainly because it was Amy’s nephew’s birthday – he turned two. As a side note, the party was fun – apart from one little hellian (who will remain nameless) who was out of control. Anyways, I got up late (around 0930) on Saturday and went for an hour long run. I basically ran around the neighbourhood until an hour was up. The wind was brutal – there were times when I was running straight into a headwind when I felt like I was moving slower than a walk! Now I know how my brother Sean felt when he ran the Halifax marathon last year. I have no idea what sort of distance I covered since this is a fairly new neighbourhood and the streets aren’t on Google maps yet and therefore I can’t map out my run on either wayfaring or using the gmap pedometer. [...] So I’ve been slacking off in my running since before Christmas. The last run I did was a short 3 miler on the Tuesday before Christmas. All the travelling we did didn’t help and then getting sick when we got back home just did me in. Anyways, yesterday, with the help of Steve I got back on the horse. I had suggested we do a 10 mile run (since I haden’t run in 2 and a half weeks I didn’t want to over do it) but Steve suggested we just run for 1.5 hours instead. Since it’s winter and the trails are very snow covered, running for distance may end up just being discouraging which is why Steve suggested we run for time instead. [...] I created a route on wayfaring for the run this weekend. This is the map that has the route on it. As you can see, not a particularily interesting run – basically just following the trans-canada trail but hopefully we’ll be sheltered from wind for most of the run. The run is only a mile longer than last week’s run but I’m not looking forward to it. What I’m really hoping is that it warms up a bit before then because running in -20 degree temperatures is about the last thing I want to do right now. [...] 12 miles today. It was Steve, Dave and I. Talk about a beautiful day – at least when we started. I think it was around -2 or so as we set off and the sun was shining. Unfortunately as the day went on the sun disappeared and the wind picked up. Running along the river on a windy day isn’t fun…especially when there is snow on the ground. Steve had hoped for ‘wind swept’ running paths but instead most of the time we were running through snow drifts. [...] |
