Posted by Kevin, on October 6th, 2009 I’ve got a bottle neck in my blog post process, and that bottle neck is uploading photos to Flickr. I normally like to have at least one photo, or video, to go with each blog post, but I am so far behind on uploading of photos and video to Flickr, that it has brought my [...]

Last year we had borrowed JK & Dana‘s TomTom for the trip to PEI, and it took us a way I don’t think I had ever gone before (not that I remembered anyway) but this year we had my iPhone and Google Maps. I had pre-planned our route there, and so when Amy started complaining that she had to pee and wanted me to alter my route on the fly – so we could get there faster – I had to refuse. I’m a slave to technology afterall, “I can’t turn there, the GPS is telling me to go straight!” So just like last year, Amy REALLY had to pee by the time we rolled into our final destination. Last year she had a reason for having such a chipmunk sized bladder (she was pregnant) but this year she had no excuses. In her defense (and mine too really) I did actually offer to stop after she told me she had to pee, but she opted to just keep going, what a trouper. ;) Other than Amy’s pea sized bladder, the trip from Fredericton to PEI was actually pretty good. The closer we got to PEI, the nicer the weather became. By the time we rolled into Windermere Cottages in Stanhope, PEI – the sun was shining in clear blue skies. It was the start of a week of beautiful weather – a welcome change from last year’s rainy stay. This trip we only saw one day of rainy skies, whereas last year I think we only saw one day of sunshine. [...]

In the interest of trying to keep my vacation post short(ish), I’ve decided to split the post in two and do one for the trip down and the time we spent in Freddy Beach, and another for the week in PEI. That should keep things relatively short, even with my tendency to ramble… I was officially on vacation at around 2000 on Friday, July 17th. It would have been earlier, but I worked from home on Friday afternoon and due to disruptions from the kids, I didn’t actually get everything done and my out of office turned on until around then. Unfortunately for us, Amy actually had to work afternoons that weekend which meant we didn’t actually start the travelling part of our vacation until Monday afternoon. (Incidentally, do you spell travelling with one L or two?) Amy had assured me she had been quite successful with this schedule (leaving in the afternoon) last time she drove home with the kids, and since she needed to get some sleep on Monday morning, and we still had lots of packing to do anyways, I didn’t argue. We ended up leaving Ottawa around 1430 or so, which put us into Montreal just around 1630 – not a great time to be driving through MTL. Oh well, we made it through without too much delay. I’m getting a bit ahead of myself though since the first ‘incident’ of our trip occurred before even getting to Montreal. Since we were going to be away for a couple of weeks, naturally there was lots to pack and bring with us. For long trips like this, we always put the big ugly cargo box on top of the car. This thing is pretty much bottom of the line in terms of what you can get, but it has served us fairly well over the years – it even made a trip to Newfoundland with the Keans one year. Anyways, I put it onto the car and filled it up with luggage. Normally I make sure to wrap everything up in plastic bags (the thing isn’t water proof – remember I said it was bottom of the line?) but there was no sign of rain for this trip so I didn’t bother this time. We were probably about 50-60 km from home when I noticed a rather large truck that appeared to be attempting to pass me on the right every chance he got. I was moving along at a pretty good clip too so I wasn’t really sure what his hurry was. Anyways, at one point me did manage to get up beside us and he was yelling and pointing at our roof. Amy rolled down the window and the dude told us that our cargo bin was open! D’oh! I didn’t really like the idea of stopping on the side of the highway so I slowed down and planned to take the next exit. However, every car that passed us would wave and point up and it got way too annoying so I just pulled over on the side of the highway. For some reason, the two locks that are supposed to help hold the thing closed (and keep people from stealing things inside) had come unlatched. Thankfully, it didn’t look like we had actually lost any luggage. I re-locked them and hoped it wouldn’t happen again. I paid close attention to the reactions of drivers/passengers in other cars that passed us for the rest of the drive. :)
The rest of the trip was pretty uneventful, although at another stop (I forget where it was) I noticed that the damn cargo box had come unlatched again. I decided then that it couldn’t be trusted anymore and vowed to spend the money to get a quality one when we got home. I’ll likely go back to Auto Racks to get something since I was very happy with their service when I bought my bike rack there. I’m thinking something along these lines might be in order. Anyways, we rolled into Freddy somewhere around 0300 or so. I was pretty bagged by that point and just wanted to go to bed. Liam hadn’t really slept much during the drive so he was pretty wired. I think we finally managed to get to bed sometime after 0400. Needless to say, I was pretty grumpy Tuesday morning/early afternoon after getting very little sleep. I decided the best remedy for my grumpiness was to go for a ride, so I jumped on my bike and headed for my dad’s place. I had a short visit there before continuing on the bike. I decided to tackle some of the hills, or what I considered hills when I was a kid, just to see what they would be like. They aren’t nearly as bad as I remember them being when I was a kid, but Fredericton is nonetheless a pretty hilly place to cycle – unless you stick around downtown. Here is the short ride I did. As I had hoped, I was in a much better mood after getting out for some fresh air and exercise. There wasn’t a whole lot else going on the rest of the week in Fredericton. I got out for a ride with Trev on Thursday that ended up being the ride from hell for Trev – 5 flats in one ride! After the 2nd flat, we figured it had to be something with his rim, so we inspected it quickly. We thought we found the problem, stuck a piece of cardboard in to fix it and continued on our way. Flats kept coming, and more cardboard was used, but obviously we either never found the problem or there were multiple problems. Once the 5th flat happened, we had run out of spare tubes (Trev had 2 extra, as did I) so Trev sat down and waited while I continued on to get my car (with the bike rack) so I could come back and pick him up. Trev later took a closer look at this rim and figured out it was a bad rim tape job. I believe he’s since rectified that problem, but unsure if he’s ventured out for a ride yet. Here is the RunKeeper track of our ride – shorter than we had hoped it would be. The only other ride I did while I was in Fredericton was on Friday, when I got out for another short ride. The goal of that ride was to get up and down the major hills to see what they were like. Three rides in four days (even if they were all quite short) definitely proves that I was on vacation. :)
I had two (ok three if you include the ride with Trev) things I wanted to accomplish when I was home in Freddy: I wanted to eat some Pizza Pizza pizza, and I wanted to get down to the market on Saturday morning for a buffalo burger. I’m happy to report that I managed to accomplish both. I got the pizza the night Amy went out with some of her friends. I had to watch the kids so I decided I didn’t really want to cook. My only miscalculation was that I went to pick up the pizza when I had both kids with me. That meant I had to get them both out of their car seats, get them inside to pay for the pizza, carry them AND the pizza back out to the car, etc. Sometimes I even amaze myself. ;) After the market on Saturday, we wrapped up our time in Fredericton with a very short visit to the Highland Games. Amy’s dad John was involved with the games again this year and got us in the back way so that we could see the Massed Bands during the opening ceremony. Liam is a big fan of bag pipers (or at least seemed to be at the National Police Memorial last year) so this was a great opportunity for him to see and hear more of them in action. I think he enjoyed it. After that, we all piled back into the car and set out for Stanhope, PEI. Stay tuned for my “Good-Bye to Windermere Cottages” post… [...]

My last post ended with, “That’s about it in terms of the big events for me.” After reading that, Amy came to talk to me and said, “That’s about it for big events?!” She clearly missed the ‘for me’ part (which I’ve bolded above). Anyways, here’s a quick update on what has been going on with the rest of the family. I think the biggest news is that Grace is crawling now! She can really get around and therefore it’s much harder to ‘watch’ her now – you actually have to watch her! In addition to the photo that accompanies this post, Amy took a video of said crawling action, and provided you’ve got the right permissions, you can check it out on Flickr. If you don’t have permission and want it, let me know. In other Grace news, she’s got 2 teeth and is working on a bunch more. Amy’s birthday has come and gone, and in addition to her adding another year onto her age, she also got a pretty kick ass birthday present this year from yours truely. :) She’s been saying for a while now that she needs a better camera to take photos of the kids with, so that’s exactly what I got her – a shiny new Nikon D5000 with a 18-105 mm VR lens. It’s pretty kick ass if you ask me. She’s got lots to learn about how to use it, but her plan is to take a course or two I think. She’s already taken some cool shots with it, so I look forward to seeing what she does with it in the future. Hmmm…what else. Oh yes, Liam is transitioning out of diapers finally. I wont say much on this front since I’m sure he wouldn’t want stories of his potty training out on the internet. Suffice it to say that he’s a smart kid and he’s doing great. That’s about all I can remember for now. Hopefully Amy will jump in with anything I may have (probably did) forget. I really think Amy should start posting some of her own entries… ;) [...]

I was on my way home the other day and my cell phone rang. I took a look at the display and it said that it was home calling. Naturally I assumed it was Amy calling, wondering when I’d be home, but much to my surprise (and delight) the first thing I heard after I said hello was Liam saying “Hi Daddy!”. Amy had put the call on handsfree and I was able to hear Liam clear as a bell. It wasn’t the longest conversation in the world…in fact I’m not sure if he said much beyond the hello, but it was definitely a great experience for me – my first call from my son. He’s taken quite a bit more interest in the telephone lately so I anticipate I’ll be getting more and more calls as time goes on. :) [...]
Posted by Kevin, on August 10th, 2008 It was bound to happen I guess – the inevitable trip to emergency with Liam. He’s a pretty high energy little guy and he loves to climb and run, and you can pretty much always find some scrapes and bruises on him from various mis-steps. Anyways, today while we were walking through a parking lot on our way to the car, he was holding onto my hand. He started lowering himself (crouching) so that he was hanging by his right arm. I pulled him up and swung him a bit forward to get him back on his feet. He thought that was a great game – so he did it a few more times. I really should have known better than to continue playing this particular ‘game’, but well… Anyways, on the last one (of course it was the last…I should say the third time) I felt something, like maybe two bones rubbing together and after that, Liam’s mood immediately changed. He started kind of whining, not outright crying, just sort of whining. We put him in the car and drove home. When we got home, he didn’t seem to want to use his right arm for anything, he just let it hang by his side. Well…it didn’t take long before we decided that we had better go to see the doctor. We hadn’t actually planned to go to the hospital, we were hoping to just go to our regular drop-in clinic, but sadly it was closed when we drove by. When we got to the hospital, we were just going to ask the triage nurse if we should stay or simply go find a clinic somewhere, and she said we might as well stay since we were already there. It didn’t take long, maybe 10 minutes, before the triage nurse actually had time to sit down with us. After that, it was maybe another 5 minutes before getting registered. We went straight from registration to a small waiting room with a few other people. There was a young girl (and her parents) who had fallen off a horse and broke her arm and another older couple – not sure what the woman was there for. Anyways, Liam had a great time playing with the older gentleman, even calling him Grampie a few times. :) I think we waited maybe 45 minutes in the small waiting room before a doctor came to check on Liam. We told him what happened and he said that he figured it was “nursemaid’s elbow”, which is something that can happen to children quite commonly. Basically a ligament in the arm gets pushed out of place and stuck behind a bone – or something like that. He said that it is quite commonly misconceived as a dislocated elbow. Anyways, he took Liam’s elbow in his hands and did some manipulation – which Liam didn’t seem to mind much (he’s such a tough guy) until the very end – and then voila! Liam was completely back to normal! It was amazing the transformation. Whereas before he would whine if he moved his arm at all, after the doctor did whatever it was that he did, he was back to climbing on the chairs and running around, just being Liam. The doctor sent Liam for an x-ray of his elbow, ‘just for completeness’ before he let us go. The x-ray showed that nothing was wrong and Liam was definitely back to his normal self. The doctor, Dr. Montgomery, was fantastic! He took the time to explain everything to us and was just generally a really nice guy. He had a good sense of humour about everything and left us feeling like we made the right choice for bringing Liam in. That being said, he did say that if it happens again to maybe wait a couple of hours to see if it sorts itself out, which quite often it will apparently. So – we were in and out within a couple of hours! That’s pretty damn good if you ask me! It cost us $13 in parking fees, but that’s nothing when you consider we went in with a little boy who was hurting and left with a little boy who was happy as a clam! [...]
