Cycling on the Queensway
I've been catching up on my google reader posts today, after having suffered through a couple of very busy days where I didn't find the time to read as much as I like, and I came across this post on Wired that talks about a group of cyclists calling themselves Crimanimalz who rode a couple of miles on L.A. freeways at rush hour to try to show that in addition to the environmental benefits, riding your bike may actually get you home quicker. I'm not sure I'd be up for anything like this (afterall it only takes one pissed off driver to cause some serious damage) but lately I've been thinking about how cool it would be if cyclists had better roads to use. Imagine a Queensway for cyclists!
So far this spring I haven't been out on my bike anywhere near as often as I'd like to be. It would be a real PITA to ride my bike to work on days when Liam is in daycare. That leaves the days that Amy is off for me to ride to and from work, but sadly those days seem to be few and far between these days. :(
Hey Kev - I think it was last year, a friend of ours biked to work every day, despite having to do daycare drop off. The way they would work it is he would bring their daughter to daycare using their Chariot (so everything else needed also fit in there) and he would lock up the Chariot at a bike rack or something. Then, his wife would use the bike to pick up their daughter by hitching the trailer to her bike and take her home. Just an idea... I don't know where your daycare is w.r.t. your house and work though, so it may be a real PITA, but thought I'd pass on the idea. Notice that for years, I'd say that I should bike to work, seeing as I'm only about 7km or so, but I have yet to do it... :)

I was thinking of doing just that, except instead of having Amy (who is 6 months pregnant and not getting any less pregnant) have to bike back with Liam, she'd just throw the chariot into the back of the car when she picked him up on her way home from work. That would be for the days when I have to drop him off. On the days when I have to pick him up, I was thinking that I could go into work early enough so that I could leave at a reasonable time such that I could get home and then jump in the car to go and get him. I think this is actually doable and I may give it a try next week when Amy is working afternoons.
The daycare is pretty close to our place, I'd guess about 2 km or so away, but it's not really on my way to work - or at least it's not on the way I take when I bike. Not sure I'd feel too comfortable taking the chariot on those busy roads at rush hour either...
Since the daycare is "not far away" in the AM you could drive there, drive back home, take the bike to work, bike back home, take the car to go to the day care , and then drive back home. Sounds like 15 minutes extra in the am and in the pm.
Is it ( could it be ) that simple a soloution?
Dad - It is possible for me to drop Liam off at daycare, then drive home, jump on my bike and bike to work. The thing about that is that I can't drop Liam off before 0715 or 0730, which means I wouldn't be able to be on my bike until maybe 0740. It takes me about 45-50 minutes to get to work on the bike, then I have to shower, so I wouldn't actually be 'at' work until 0845 or so. That means I wouldn't be leaving work until 1645 at the earliest. Liam has to be picked up by 1645 so... What I've got going for me is that I rarely have to do both drop-off and pick-up, it's usually one or the other. At any rate, I hope to bike into work at least once this week so we'll see how it goes.
