Posted by Kevin, on January 29th, 2008 Hehe – I just read a post over on Duane’s blog about his fight against the evil DARTH JEALOUSY and figured I’d do my small bit to help him out. (The free print he’s offering up is good incentive too – I’m a sucker for ‘free shit’) While I don’t know Duane that well, I have met him a few times (last time was at the Raw Banana wedding) and enjoy reading his blog. Good luck Duane! Just for good measure – I think I’ll include this little gem: [...]
Posted by Kevin, on January 5th, 2008 I was watching TV the other day and and ad came on for something – I wasn’t watching very closely so I don’t know what it was for. Anyways, at the end of the Ad, there was a bit about winning an iPhone. You had to text something to some number to be entered into a draw. Again – I didn’t really catch the whole thing, but I think I remember the disclaimer about the texts being that they cost $x CANADIAN per text. This suggests that the iPhone will be available in Canada pretty soon wouldn’t you say? Anyone else see this ad? [...]

It has been a while since I posted anything, that’s for sure – but I’m finding it difficult to make time for things like blog posts these days. It seems if I’m not at work or chasing Liam around then I’m desperately seeking sleep. I stopped running a while back (while I was fighting off a cold) and have been meaning to get back into it but that hasn’t happened yet. Perhaps that is contributing to my feeling of everlasting exhaustion. [...]
Posted by Kevin, on October 22nd, 2007 I was looking around on Google Maps the other day, down around the area of Haggerty’s Cove, and I noticed a rather glaring error. Check it out for yourself and see if you can spot it. Anyways, I sent an email off to the folks at Google to let them know about it and I finally heard back from them today. They told me that they source their map data from NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas and to contact them directly. So I did. I just went to the NAVTEQ site and found the same error and submitted a correction request. I attempted to submit a correction request to TeleAtlas as well but they basically didn’t have any real data on NB at all. Anyways, we’ll see if anything ever comes of it. [...]
Posted by Kevin, on April 3rd, 2007 Holy crap! What’s going on with Facebook?! As Steve pointed out, it’s the fastest growing social network site on the net right now, or something like that anyways. I got sucked in by my friend Julia Freeman who is down in Australia right now. She posted some photos on the site and then sent me a link so I could check them out. Of course I had to sign up first to see them – which I did – and since then…I’ve been finding people I lost touch with way back in elementary school! Crazy! It’s very addictive – logging in every once in a while to see what others are up to and if by chance I get an email saying someone has marked me as a friend – it’s like Christmas morning! Who will I find next? [...]

Flickr has finally implemented it’s version of sets of sets, or nested folders – something I have been waiting for for a long time. As you can see from the mosiac to the right, you have the ability to easily create a mosiac for each ‘collection’ (which is what they are calling them) you create. I’m not sure when they introduced these ‘collections’ but it must have been recently. Collections can contains other collections OR sets, but not both. I couldn’t think of a situation where this would be a problem off the top of my head, but natually Dave helped me out. [...]
Posted by Kevin, on December 22nd, 2006 I finally did it! It took me a while, but I finally got my MG-35 working with my iMac. I just did a quick scan back through my ‘computer’ posts and it turns out I never posted about this particular toy that I bought. Well the MediaGate MG-35 is a product that will stream music / pictures / video to your TV from a computer on your network. Here is a link to the product page on the company’s website that makes it. I picked it up from PC Cyber here in Stittsville a while ago (probably 7 or 8 months ago) and paid something like $200 for it. You can get it now for $170 I think. But I digress… When I first got the thing, it said that it worked with Windows machines as well as Macs. The instruction book that came with the thing was brutal – some really bad translation from Korean I suppose. A quick search of the interweb didn’t really turn up anything helpful either. I did find a site, Otherworld Computing, that sells the things and they had a handy video showing how they got it working with a mac, but sadly, after contacting their tech support – they refused to help me out since I didn’t buy from them. Note to self – NEVER buy anything from Otherworld Computing. Well since I had a windows box in the basement which wasn’t doing much, I have been using it to host my movies so that I can stream them to my TV using the MG-35. It was a bit of a PITA since I had to copy the movies from my mac to the windows box first, but it worked. Off and on I searched around seeing if I could figure out how to get the thing working with my mac so I could eliminate the windows box and save myself some time. I learned a bit about samba in the process. And tonight – I got the MG-35 working with my iMac! Sweet! Turns out OS X is running version 3 of samba so I searched for ‘samba 3 anonymous share’ on google. The first link that showed up was the one that got me going. Many thanks to Michel. Here is the short form:
- edit the /etc/smb.conf file
- under [global] add ‘map to guest = bad user’
Then for each share you want to create for the MG-35, add it into the smb.conf file and use the options in the following example: [Share] comment = Share browseable = yes path = /Users/haggaret/Movies public = yes writable = no guest ok = yes Then enable Windows Sharing on the mac (system pref / sharing) and you should be good to go. Oh yeah, one last thing you need to do is to make sure that the directory you’ve listed under path has permissions set to read and execute for everyone, I just used 755 for the above share and it worked great. I tried just read permissions, but that didn’t seem to work. Oh and for the actual movie files, I only used read permissions for everyone. You could use the same principle to share your music / pictures I suppose, but I only ever use the MG-35 to watch movies / downloaded TV shows so… Hopefully this helps out somebody out there who was having the same troubles I was. Posted by Kevin, on October 13th, 2006 While chatting with Steve the other day about him purchasing a domain name for himself (which he did by the way – activesteve.com), he told me that he found a site that would sell you a domain name for $9.95 (Canadian no less!) and that included registration! The beauty part was that you could even get a .ca domain for the same price. For some reason, I’ve always found that .ca domain are more expensive… Anyways, I decided that I could spare $10 and picked up haggerty.ca on a lark. I’ve pointed it here for now and am debating on whether or not I want to actually use it. What do you think – stick with haggaret.com or switch to haggerty.ca? Update: Chris pointed out that I didn’t mention the name of the company I talked about above. It was Netfirms. While they are cheap, they don’t seem to offer the same level of features and service that I get from EasyDNS. If I do end up keeping haggerty.ca, I’ll likely switch it over to EasyDNS, even though it’ll cost me more. [...]

Does anyone out there know why this little device is listed as “Not compatible with iPod Shuffle”? Here is a link to the manufacturer’s page on the item. It clearly states it’s not compatible with the iPod shuffle but I’m not sure why.
Here is a similar device that is sold on Tigerdirect.ca that is listed as an “iPod Shuffle car charger”. What is the difference?! If I buy this second one, will it still charge my regular iPod or iPod mini?

Posted by Kevin, on July 20th, 2006 Well once again I am praising Google! Thanks to their caching activities, I was able to recover all my lost comments, and even most of the comment IDs to boot! The only thing I’m missing now, and I’ll never get the info (which doesn’t bother me), is the IP address of the machine that the comment was made from. Oh well. With my backup strategy in place now, hopefully I’ll never have to go through the same pain again. Oh and thanks to Chris for reminding me that I should be thanking Dave for suggesting I go this route to try to recover my lost comments. [...]
