Google Reader

Way back when, Boris told me about something called RSS and showed me how I could use it to bring information to me, instead of having to go out and look for it myself. It took a while, but eventually I ‘got it’ and started amassing RSS feeds from all over the place – starting with my friends’ blogs, and then later finding feeds from newspapers, tech blogs, and even Environment Canada (for local weather updates). I tried different desktop clients as my RSS aggregator (or reader) for a while, but then eventually found out about, and started using exclusively, Google Reader. I love it, and one of the things I like best about it is ‘Shared Items’ – both being able to share with my friends as well as being able to see what they are sharing. Even better, with some recently introduced features, I can even add a note to items that I share to explain why I’m sharing them. FriendFeed takes this one step further and allows you to have conversations (in the form of comments) back and forth about shared items. I signed up for FriendFeed and have it aggregating some of my stuff (Flickr photos, Google Reader shared items, and Twitter posts) but since nobody else I know is using it – I’m not really making use of it all that much. My FriendFeed feed is here. Anyways, if you’re not using Google Reader yet – I highly recommend it. My shared items page can be found here and there is even an RSS feed for them – although if you’ve got me listed as a contact in your gmail, then you’ll automatically have a feed for my shared items anyways. OS X 10.5.3 update

I applied the 10.5.3 update last night to both my iMac and my MacBook. One of the big issues that I was hoping would be addressed was the stability of the wifi connection on the macbook – ever since I got the thing, it randomly drops its connection to the AP on my network. In the release notes for the update, it did mention some improvements to 802.1x stability and reliability but alas – I have not seen any such improvements since updating. I am still seeing random drops of my wifi connection. :( The other bummer is the fact that they updated Address Book to allow syncing with your gmail contacts, but it only seems to be available to those who have an iPhone. Huh?! [...]

QR code for haggaret.com

qrcode Following Duane‘s lead, I decided to go ahead and generate a QR code for haggaret.com using the link that Duane referenced in his post. Will it ever get used? I can’t imagine what for so probably not, but there it is anyways. I think the first time I heard about these things was from Chris Foo, who was talking about using them for HungryTable. He was thinking you’d have one for each restaurant that would be visible in the window or whatever and it would link back to the reviews on HungryTable. That way you’d be able to scan it with your phone, and then quickly check out the reviews before deciding if you want to go inside or not – a cool idea if you ask me. [...]

iPhone in Canada soon

Dave just sent me a link to this article which states that Rogers has reached a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. “We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year,” Rogers chief executive officer Ted Rogers said on Tuesday in a statement. “We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned.” I’m assuming they’ll hold off until June so they can offer the new 3G iPhone. Man – I can’t wait! Update: Is this the plan that will go with the iPhone? Seems too cheap to me… [...]

Flickr gets video!

Well I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, but Flickr has finally introduced video! Now I just need to sort through all my old videos and maybe clean up a few and start uploading! Here’s a sample of things to come. :) How awesome is this?! [...]

New MacBook

MacBook

The MacBook I ordered last Friday arrived here on Wednesday. Unfortunately I had to make a special trip out to the Fedex depot out near the airport to pick it up, but that’s what I get for sending it to my house instead of work I guess. Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised at how quick it got here. Like I said, ordered it on Friday and I had it by Wednesday evening, and it would have been Wednesday morning if I had been home. Free shipping too – so that’s damn good if you ask me.

After doing some initial setup on Wednesday night, I brought it to work with me on Thursday to see if I’d like using it at work instead of my work laptop. I think I do prefer it, but after thinking about it some more, I decided that it doesn’t make sense to ‘put the miles’ on my personal laptop when I’ve already got one at work. It’ll be less wear and tear on it by not carting it back and forth to work everyday – especially since I haven’t got a bag for it yet. And on the plus side, I’m going to stop hauling my work machine back and forth and just leave it at work since I’ve now got access to a laptop at home.

First impressions are good, although I’ve been using a mac since Boris converted me back in 2004, so I kind of knew what to expect. The only issue I’ve had with it is that it doesn’t seem to like to stay connected to my wireless access point. Very sporadically it will just drop the connection and I have to manually re-establish the link. Kind of annoying. I wasn’t sure if it was a problem with the MacBook or the access point, but after doing a quick google search, it looks like it’s more than likely the MacBook that is the culprit. Too bad. That being said, I’ve been connected continuously (and streaming music to remote speakers) now for probably a couple of hours so it’s not that big a problem.

It’s nice and small and quite light – of course not as light as a MacBook Air – but then again, it’s more functional, if you ask me. This thing will be perfect for taking on trips for blogging on the go and storing photos, playing music, movies, etc…just what I was looking for really.

AirPort Express for the summer

AirPort Express

Amy just got back from a trip to Syracuse. While she was down there, I asked her to pick me up an AirPort Express at the Apple store. I could have ordered it online, but even with the Nortel EPP discount it was still more expensive than buying it in the states. Argh! Anyways, Amy was kind enough to buy it for me and smuggle it back into Canada. :) Funny side story about Amy’s experience in buying this thing for me: She went into the store with a printout of the webpage I had sent her to show her what to pick up. She said, “I have no idea what this is, but do you have these?” and showed the guy the printout. His eyes lit up and he responded with, “Yes, and it does everything you could want it do!” To which Amy replied, “You mean it’ll vacuum and clean my house for me?!” The guy sadly didn’t get the joke. Anyways, I’ve unboxed it, plugged it in and tried it out. It’s frickin’ awesome! The only reason I bought it was for the ‘air tunes’ or iTunes music streaming – the plan being to have an easy way to pipe music to the back yard for when the deck is built (or being built I guess). True, I could have just used my old squeezebox but this thing integrates so seemlessly with iTunes that I just couldn’t resist. Instead of having to use a web interface to control the squeezebox, I can use iTunes on any of my computers (including the new MacBook that is on the way) and I get all the great features like Party Shuffle! The other great thing is that iTunes allows you to output to both the airport express AND the local computer simultaneously which means I wont have to miss any tunes if I go from inside to out or vice versa. Awesome! I’ve only played with it very briefly so far, by using the speakers I’ve got plugged into the iMac, but I’ll be heading to future shop sometime in the next few days to pick up a set of speakers (and subwoofer) to be used exclusively with this thing. I did a quick check and it looks like I can get a decent set for like $40 so… I’m psyched!

Safari browser

I see that Safari 3.1 was released today. The articles I’ve read say that it is blazingly fast. I’ve downloaded it onto my work laptop and will likely see the update ready to install on my mac when I get home. I’ve been using Safari on my mac for a while now (having switched back from using Firefox) because it IS fast, especially in the time it takes to first fire up. On my mac, I click Safari and not a half second later the window is open and loading the home page. Conversly, using Firefox, even the new Firefox 3 Beta 4, it takes quite a few seconds to fire up initially. It’s a different story on my work laptop (a windows machine) and on it I continue to use Firefox. One of the things that really bothers me about Safari, and it seems to be this way on both the mac and windows version (and has been like this since I’ve been using it – it’s not limited to this new version) is the strange behaviour it exhibits around tabs – specifically opening new links in tabs. In the preferences, under the General tab, there is a choice for ‘opening links from applications’:

  • in a new window
  • in a new tab in the current window

I’ve selected ‘in a new tab in the current window’, just as I do for the similar preference in Firefox, yet when I click on links in Google Reader, it opens a new frickin’ window! WTF?! In Firefox the behaviour is as expected – it opens the link in a new tab in the current window! Anybody know if there is a way to fix this in Safari? [...]

Blogroll lengthening…

Wow – it seems everyone is getting themselves a blog these days. Just in the past week or so I’ve added 3 new blogs to my “Friends” block. Alyssa recently got back on the blog wagon after having let her last attempt at a blog wither and die. Lets hope this one lasts a little longer. Since she’s got a new baby now, I’m sure she’ll have lots of stories to share, but perhaps not the time to share them. :( The Lawsons also recently started up a new blog. Already they’ve put a few posts up and it looks like Grant will be providing some comedic relief in his posts. Check out his story about Maya’s tea party. And last but not least – I received an email today from Julie saying that her and Trevor have started up a blog. She is wise to start their blog by saying that she makes no promises on the number of posts and the time in between each of them. I get hassled a bit for my lack of posting but that’s just the way things go. We can’t all be like Steve and write a post a day for Pete’s sake! I’ve also subscribed (in Google Reader – my aggregator of choice) to a bunch of other blogs which I find interesting, not necessarily friends of mine, but acquaintances like Duane and Lloyd. Lloyd is expecting his first baby soon so I always enjoy reading about other people’s experiences in that part of their life. Anyways, keep up the good work folks – I enjoy reading everyone’s stories and keeping up to date however I can. [...]

New 16 GB iPhone – Yes!

Just saw an article saying that new 16 GB iPhones are available as of today (as well as a 32 GB iPod Touch). Pricing was listed at $499 (US). This is definitely good news. I’ve been saying I want an iPhone since they came out. Yes I know I could just go buy an unlocked one, but I don’t want one of those, I want Rogers to offer the damn thing with an unlimited data plan! I wasn’t a big fan of the sizes previously offered (4 GB and 8GB) but it wasn’t enough to put me off getting one IF it was available. Very happy to hear they are available with double the memory now. Would be ideal if they had a 32 GB iPhone – cause then that could replace my 30 GB iPod completely. So…how much longer will we have to wait up here in Canada? [...]
