What better way to follow up a PB 1/2 marathon than with 10-12 hours of vomiting and 24+ hours of diarrhea?! I think I can safely say that there has never been a time in my life when I felt worse – not even the last time I managed to pick up the Norwalk virus. In the end, at the low point, I had lost 12 pounds in 36 hours or so. Luckily I had my wonderful wife, Amy, to take care of me. If the money was better, I’d suggest she quit her current job and become a nurse. :) Thanks Amy – I think you saved my life. Here’s hoping you and Liam avoid this dreaded virus!

So Ottawa’s hypothermic 1/2 marathon has come and gone and I’ve yet to post about it – more on why it took me so long in another post. What can I say about this event? Lets start with the positives – I managed a personal best 1/2 marathon time of somewhere around 1:47:19 (my previous best was set during last year’s marathon and was 1:55:04) and I ran nearly the entire race with Grant – he beat me by about 2 seconds I think. In the end, I was pretty pleased with my time. I think we (Grant and I finished one after another) finished somewhere around the middle of the pack. Why all this guessing on my part? Well that leads me to the negatives from this race.

Liam was born at the end of September and about a week after his birth, I went online to the Newborn Registration Service and filled out the birth registration online. At the same time, I applied online for a birth certificate and Social Insurance Number. It was quick and easy – no complaints there. I printed off the form like they said and mailed it, along with a cheque for $33 to the city as I was instructed. At the same time, the same information was sent electronically to the provincial and federal governments for the birth certificate and SIN respectively. (Note also that my CC was charged immediately for the birth certificate) Then I started the waiting game…the website said it could take up to 4 months for the registration to be completed. Wow. Seems like a long time but given the fact that information needs to be verified and the like, not outrageous I guess.

Liam took the plunge, so to speak, on Saturday and got Baptized. Many thanks to everyone who came to witness the event, including both sets of grandparents (who travelled from NB), his aunts and uncles on his mom’s side and the usual suspects (the Lawsons, the Masons and the Herages minus she-rage). We would also like to thank John and Dana for agreeing to become Liam’s Godparents. And a special thanks to my mom who made Liam’s Christening gown.
