At the suggestion of Robbie (on Friday night at the Dr. Teeth year end party), a bunch of us went out on Sunday afternoon for some disc golf at Jacque Cartier Park. The course (18 holes) is one that is maintained by the Ottawa Disc Golf Club and was the first course put in around Ottawa. Since then there have been a couple more courses introduced, including a 9 hole in Kanata and an 18 hole at Camp Fortune – neither of which I have ever played, but I digress (as usual). I hadn’t played for at least a couple of years so I was anxious to get out and see how I did, and I’m glad I did cause it was a really good time.
The plan was to meet at the park at 1400 on Sunday afternoon. When JK and I showed up, Luc was waiting and Dave was just pulling in. We found Greg on the other side of the park and proceeded to start warming up while we waited for Rob and Matt to arrive. After about 30 minutes of waiting, we decided to start without them.
The first couple of holes went well, with me managing to par both. After the second hole, the boys showed up, with Steve and Andy no less. Andy had also brought little Stella with him so she could run around while the boys played a round. We chatted briefly and figured they’d catch up with us eventually since we had five people and they had only 4 (plus a toddler). We were wrong.
Moving on – I screwed up an easy shot on hole three and ended up with a bogey. I was a bit upset about that. That was the start of a bad streak. I managed a par on hole 4, but bogeyed holes 5 and 6 to bring me to plus 3 – 2 strokes behind the leader JK. Another par on hole 7, as well as 8, followed by another bogey on 9 and I was sitting at plus 4, a fairly unhappy man. However…my luck was about to change. Miraculously I pulled off a birdie on the next three holes (10, 11 and 12) to bring me back down to plus 1 and into the lead!
Crossing the street back into the big park where we played the rest of the holes. Nothing too notable to speak of, I got a par on 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 before finishing with a bogey on 18 – giving me a final score of plus 2. Could have been worse though…Luc managed to lose one of his favourite discs on the last hole. We figure the river got it. All in all, not a bad return to the sport. I really enjoyed myself.
I’m not sure how everyone else made out on the day – but I think everyone had a good time. I’d say we should do it again this coming Sunday but hopefully I’ll have a new baby to take care of by then. :)
