Week 6 – Stepback Week

Week 6 Long Run

Another great week of training. I’m even hoping to get in some cross training tomorrow – perhaps a skate on the canal.

Grant and I ran the route that you see on the left. We left from his place, ran to the canal and then beside the canal to Bank St (Lansdown Park). As soon as we turned around it got really windy – or at least that was our theory because we didn’t want to believe that we had run with a tail wind up to that point.

Anyways, on the way back we opted to run along the canal (instead of beside the canal), but on the sides where it wasn’t pure ice. There were a few times where we had to cross the ice and that was interesting…lets just say if we had run the entire distance on the ice, it would have taken us about five times as long to finish the run.

It was a very enjoyable run. We only ran 7 miles (actually a bit less thanks to a few on the fly changes to the route) but I felt great throughout the run. It was great to run outside (and with someone else) again – made the run seem to go by quick. In the end we covered the distance in 63:48 which is exactly the pace I want to have for my long runs.

As a side note – I found a running calculator that gives me all sorts of good info for my training – like what pace I should be running for different runs.

I like that calculator. I’ll have to try it out for my runs. Personally, I track every run I do, including the pace calculation and the projected marathon time, just to see my trends over time. I generally don’t ‘aim’ for an exact pace, but rather run at paces that feel right, then post-compare the results to what I’d like to get. Still not sure where I stand in the training, since the other races I’ve been doing have probably been impacting some of the runs (swapping running for snowshoeing/skiing). 12 weeks till race time! Time to get serious, eh?
