The brand spanking new iMac with an intel processor (Core Duo) or the older (but still new) G5 iMac? For the same price you seem to get Bluetooth 2.0 and Airport Extreme thrown in on the brand spanking new iMac as compared to the G5 iMac. Everything else is the same. They also claim that the new iMac (with the Intel Core Duo) is twice as fast as the old G5 iMac. Seems like a no brainer right? But is there bound to be problems with a brand new product? Given my experience with new products, I would expect at least some problems.
I may not even end up purchasing either (depends on what my accountant says the business can afford) but was just wondering if anyone had a good reason NOT to go with the new intel based iMac?
Unless you really get a killer deal on the “old” one.
It does look like they’re continuing to offer both for a while. Interesting.
I’ve purchased the first edition of several products in the past. The first G4 tower. The first iMac with the flat panel and domed base. Never regretted either one.
Actually, this April is 2 years for this here Powerbook. Might have to turn it into a Macbook….
Now I just need to figure out if it’s in the budget. :) Other things I need to decide on is whether or not to go wireless with the keyboard and mouse (it would be an easy decision if they had a wireless mighty mouse) and whether or not to upgrade the RAM at the factory. I have no idea how easy it is to add RAM to an iMac myself so I’ll have to figure that out before making the purchase.
Boris, didn’t your first generation PowerMac G5 have some killer bug with playing back Quicktime files? Remember your screensaver locking up? Ahh heck, I guess the screensaver doesn’t come on that often… :)
I am planning to wait exactly 11 months more before I upgrade to the new Macbook. I would like to soak at least 3 years out of my $2300 computer before I trade it in, that’s all. Plus that will give them time to soak the bugs out of the systems as well as (hopefully) produce a native M$ Office (which I use 99% of my day).
