Well at the end of week 14 was a 14 mile run. This week was a step back week, and I was happy for the drop in mileage after last weekend’s 18 miler. I did the run with Grant and Dave and as you can see from the photo on the right, we ran along the river / canal again, which I always enjoy. Next week is my longest week of training with a total of 40 miles (64 kms) to run.

This past Thursday, Amy went in for her second ultrasound appointment. As you can see from the photo on the left, we got another picture. We also got a video! I’m working on getting it posted here for those who are interested in seeing it.
Anyways, the baby was far enough along in its development that the technician was able to tell us what the sex of the baby was. And the answer is…it’s a boy! Yep, you read it right, a boy! Whew! Not that I would have been upset if it was a girl, but I would have had to take a lot of teasing from a lot of people. [...]

Well not quite, but still 18 miles and I believe the longest run I’ve ever done. I started the run with Dave but finished alone. Dave and I ran together for the first 10 miles or so but he dropped off once we hit the hill on the other side of Parliament Hill. Considering we were running at a pace faster than Dave would have run alone, that’s some nice work Dave! [...]

A new road bike to add to my list of recently purchased toys. Picked this bad boy up on Easter weekend at Bushtukah. They were certainly friendly there, but they didn’t set the bike up for me. I still need to look into doing that.
Anyways, I got Steve’s help in making this decision too. He had pointed me to Cyclogik and told me to take a look at the Kona Zing they were selling for $1350. I talked to a guy at work, Paul Smeulders, who is a big road biker, and asked him for his opinion. He said he thought I’d be happy with it, but suggested that since I was going to be going to Cyclogik anyways that I may as well take a look at the Opus Andante while I was there. The Andante was $2000. [...]

Steve graciously offered to scour the internet in search of a bike for me. It’s all part of his plan to get me to do a few more adventure races with him this year. Anyways, he found the bike pictured on the right, a Trek Fuel 90. I picked it up the weekend after we got back from Panama. I’m not sure what year it is, the guy said it’s either an ’02 or ’03, but in any case, it’s in fantastic shape! I’ve only taken it out for a quick spin down the TC trail (I still haven’t found my helmet since the move) but it felt good. It was my first experience with clipless pedals so that was yet another reason to take it easy on the first ride. I really like the disc brakes on it, they seem to work way better than old style bike brakes. They may add a bit of weight, but since this bike is soo much lighter than my old mountain bike, I don’t notice. [...]

As I mentioned, I didn’t keep up with my training too well while I was down in Panama. Since we got back – I got back on track. I jumped right back into things with week 11 of the training program which included a a 4 mile, 8 mile and another 4 mile run throughout the week before finishing out the week with a 16 mile long run (with Dave). Last week was week 12 – 4, 8 and 5 mile runs (I only ran 4 by mistake on Thursday) during the week and then a step back to 12 miles on the weekend, which I ran with Steve and Grant (Dave ran the first mile with us but then dropped back – see his post for details). The big accomplishment of last week’s long run was that I ran for 80 minutes before taking a walking break! I was happy with that but after we finished I thought back and wished we haden’t stopped at all. Oh well. This week has gone well with a 4 mile and 9 mile run so far. Tonight is supposed to be another 5 miles and then this weekend’s long run is a whopping 18 miles! Last night I set a new personal best for running time with no breaks at just under 81 minutes. Yes it’s only a few seconds more than I managed with Grant and Steve – but since I was alone the whole time (with nobody to motivate me but myself) – I take it as a victory. [...]

…is what we’re saying in this photo – or something like that. Yes I’m finally getting around to blogging about our trip to Panama back in March. I’ll sum it up by saying we had a fantastic time – thanks to Greg and Alyssa for inviting us along!
We headed down for the last week of March and into the first few days of April.
Greg and Alyssa were getting married. The wedding was on April first and no – it wasn’t an April Fools joke. [...]

Ok so this post is actually only about running (more on Panama later) – and how I slacked off big time while I was down in Panama. Of the 4 runs (totalling 29 miles) I only managed to get two of them done (totalling probably about 8 miles). Pathetic! The two runs I did manage were the Tuesday and Thurday runs, but I skipped the big one – the most important one. Excuses? Nothing good – it was HOT and I was hungover a couple of the days. Grant did better than me – he ran 4 days I believe. If I had known that he was running (where was the invite buddy?) perhaps that would have motivated me a bit more. Oh well.
