Running through Long Beach

By kevin - Posted on 13 November 2005

I guess it's a good thing that the week I decided to slack off and skip two runs was a 'step-back' week cause wow...did the five miles I did this morning ever seem tough!

I think I started out way too fast and that was likely part of my problem. I ended up walking for a bit longer than a minute at around the half way mark - the end of the Belmont pier. I was debating whether or not I was going to be able to finish the rest of the run without walking, but I eventually got my second wind and finished without any trouble. I think I could have gone a few more miles if needed.

This was my route.

Total time was around 46 and a half minutes. Certainly going to have to cut that down as I get closer to the 10K that I plan on doing on New Year's Eve.

There is a lot of concrete down here, I'll tell you that much. Not great on the joints. The other fun part is when you are running through the city (not along the beach) and you're coming to a crosswalk and there is a countdown timer for the walk light - certainly makes you speed up your pace when you're 100+ feet away and the timer is already on 15 seconds. :)

I think I'll probably do the rest of my runs this week on a treadmill, provided that this hotel has one. I wont get a chance to do them in the morning because I have to be onsite by 0700. Looking forward to my long run in San Francisco, that should be cool.

I just posted about this on my site -- check out Wayfaring, where you can create/edit your own maps and keep them. You could make a map exclusively for tracking your runs.

Thanks Boris, I'll check it out.
