Man those Slim Devices guys are on the ball!
I’ve been having a few issues lately with my squeezebox, mostly problems with it staying connected to the slimserver. It would periodically lose its connection and then eventually sync up again. I’ve also been having problem with large playlists. I can’t say for sure when this trouble started, but I’m sure it was after an upgrade to the slimserver. I try to keep up with all the latest releases. But I digress…
After upgrading yet again and not seeing my problems solved, in fact things got A LOT worse, I decided it was time to do something. I went to the Slim Devices web site and started poking around their support pages. There was nothing in the FAQ about it and I couldn’t find anyone else having the same problems I was having so I sent their support staff an email. That was yesterday afternoon. TODAY I got a response to my email! He told me that nobody else has reported the problem I am experiencing (btw the latest problem is that the slimserver just wont stay running – at all) and he asked for the slimserver.log file. I happily responded to his email with the information requested. Now I am anxiously awaiting his analysis. But…being a support guy myself (granted for a much different product) I know that these things sometimes take time.
Anyways, I just wanted to give a shout out to the Slim Devices Support staff and let them know they are doing a fantastic job! I never dreamed of getting a response to my email anywhere near that quick.
And just as a point of interest…I took a look at the log file myself and there seems to be a problem accessing a database. I’m seeing disk I/O errors all over the place. I’m thinking I may just clear out the current installation of the slimserver and start from scratch to see if that fixes things.
Well thanks to Kevin @ Slim Devices for all his help. Turned out to be a problem with my hard disk. I ran Disk Frist Aid on the drive (at his suggestion) and was able to repair the problem. However, that didn’t seem to sort out the trouble with the slimserver. I thought I was deleting all the files associated with the slimserver, but I missed the most important thing, the database associated with it. D’Oh!
Anyways, after deleting that and starting over from scratch, everything is working again! Yah! And I didn’t even have to downgrade to an old version of the slimserver like I had planned to do. Sweet stuff…
