Marathon training – week 9

Another week of training over. This is the schedule I was supposed to follow:

Tues – 3 miles, Wed – 7 miles, Thurs – 4 miles, Saturday – 10 miles

And here is what I actually did:

Tues – a little more than 3 miles, Saturday – around 10 miles

This was the first week that I did any running outside. My first run outside was on Tuesday and I was supposed to do 3 miles. I haden’t bother to measure out a 3 mile course beforehand so I decided to just run by time. In the past, inside, a 3 mile run would normally take me around 26 and a half mintues so I ran for nearly 26 minutes. After the run I went and drove the course I ran and it turned out to be 5.1 kms (which is just over 3 miles) so I was happy with that.

On wednesday I wasn’t feeling very well so I skipped my run. Thursday was the same story. Friday was a rest day anyways so no running then either. By Saturday it had been 4 days since my last run so I figured I had better go or else I’d be in trouble. I decided that I’d continue with running outside, especially since it was a beautiful day. I didn’t get going on my run until 1830 though because of other things I had to do during the day. I suited up and made sure to bring some gatorade with me this time.

Again, I haden’t bothered to map out a 10 mile course beforehand so I just started running. I was betting on me running at a 10 min/mile pace so I figured if I ran for an hour and a half I’d be pretty close to 10 miles. After the run I once again jumped into the truck and traced out the route I had run. In the end it turns out I fell between 300 and 400 metres short of 10 miles so I was happy with that. The sad part is that I somehow managed to get a good sized blister on the bottom of BOTH feet. Ouch! I’m pretty sure that is going to hurt for my next run.

As for today (Sunday), I went to the dog park with Ellie for an hour for my cross training. It was another beautiful day so I was happy to be outside.

Next Saturday is a 14 mile run…that’s gonna be a tough one.

Not bad, but how about this guy?

Dean Karnazes of San Francisco is the undisputed king of “ultra” marathon races, writes Art Carey in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

He has run 262 miles nonstop — the equivalent of 10 marathons — mountain-biked for 24 hours, and run a marathon to the South Pole.

This fall, Mr. Karnazes aims to run 300 miles. He has plugged his blisters with Super Glue, eaten whole pizzas and cheesecakes on the run and even fallen asleep during a race.

During a short run with the reporter, the ultra-marathoner “barely breathing, was there to remind me that pain is just weakness leaving the body.” — Globe and Mail, March 23, 2005
