First outside run of the year

The weather was nice yesterday so I decided that I’d do my first outdoor run since I started training. I’m not sure if I was running faster or not, but I’ll say that running outside seems to be significantly more tiring that running on a treadmill. I’ve yet to actually measure the distance that I ran, but I figure it must be close to the 3 miles that I was supposed to do. I’ll drive the route today to see just how far I went.

In other news, my long run last Saturday was 13 miles! Basically a half marathon distance. I completed the run in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 10 seconds. Once again it was the single toughest workout I’ve ever done.

Afterwards, I got some tips from Grant and then later on from my brother Sean. Both of them told me that if my workout is longer than 1 hour that I should be taking in some energy and replacing what I’ve sweated out. Grant suggested Gatorade and granola bars and Sean mentioned that he used gels. To date I’ve only been drinking water. I think adding some energy into the mix after the workout hits an hour is going to really help.

I picked up some Gatorade and some ‘Fruit To Go’ so we’ll see if that helps at all.

UPDATE: I measured the course that I ran yesterday and it turns out it is longer than 3 miles, not by much, but still… The other thing is that I did that run faster than I’ve done any other 3 mile run I’ve done before.
