A friend of ours invited us out to their cottage for the day on Saturday for some winter fun. They own a couple of snowmobiles and their cottage is on a lake. The name of the lake is Bob’s Lake and it’s located about 25 minutes outside of Perth, to the west I believe, but I’d have to check a map to be sure of that. Jim tells me that Bob’s Lake is part of the rideau canal system, in that the canal draws water from the lake during the summer. Jim says that the level of the lake fluctuates as much as 6 or 7 feet over the summer.
We got to the cottage sometime after 2 pm. It had been an absolutely beautiful day up to that point, but when we got to the cottage, it had just started to snow. Don’t get me wrong though, the snow didn’t make the day any less great.
Anyways, we unloaded the supplies (Judy had graciously offered to make some chilli for us) and got the fire going in the wood stove to warm up the cottage. Ellie had a bit of a run around with Tess, one of their dogs. After unloading the snowmobiles off the trailer, we went back inside to wait for Judy to arrive. She had a few things to do before heading up to meet us.
Before long Judy arrived (with two more of their dogs – Ellie and Kiana) and soon enough we were on our way. We left the dogs in the cottage while we were out and about. Jim lead us on a little tour of the area before heading back to the cottage.
The girls dropped us off to get the chilli started while they went out for a spin. When they got back it was the boys turn to go for a spin. Jim let me take the Yamaha this time (I had driven the Polaris when we went out all together) so I could see the difference between the two. The Polaris that he has is considered a touring machine while the Yamaha is a combination sport/touring. The Yamaha was quite a bit more responsive!
While Jim and I were out by ourself, the snow was coming down pretty damn good! At one point while following Jim, I lost him in the near white out conditions. We were travelling straight on a large lake so I was pretty sure that if I just kept going straight that I’d eventually see him again, and I was right. Made me a little uneasy though, considering I didn’t know exactly where we were.
Eventually we headed back to the cottage. When we got back we sat down for a nice big plate of chilli. It was delicious! After eating, we packed up our stuff and headed back to town. All in all, an absolutely fantastic day! I’m really thinking about getting a snowmobile next year.
Huge thanks to both Jim and Judy for a great day of winter fun! I really have to remember to bring my camera on trips like this! D’Oh!
