Marathon training – week 5

Week 5:

Mon – rest, Tues – 3, Wed – 5, Thurs – 3, Fri – rest, Sat – 10, Sun – cross

Not a bad week overall. I didn’t have any trouble with the weekday runs, in fact I’ve been speeding up my week day runs for the past couple of weeks. As for the run on Saturday, it wasn’t too bad. My first double digit workout so to speak, but I felt pretty good afterwards. I also did it at a faster pace than I normally do the long runs. And to top it off, Amy and I went skating on the canal after my run too.

I changed my routine somewhat, after talking with my brother a while back. He mentioned something to me about 10 and 1, meaning he runs for 10 minutes and then walks for 1. I modified that somewhat and ran for 20 and then walked for 1 (actually probably closer to 19 and 1 but…), which was slightly different than my 20 and 0.5 I’ve been doing. That extra 30 seconds seems to really make a difference.

I want to continue with my plan of walking through every water station on the marathon course and I’d like to run the full time between them. The distance is close to 2 miles (3 Km) and since I’ve been doing my long runs so slow, it was taking me nearly 20 minutes to cover 2 miles. Since I want to do the marathon at a pace of 8:34 / mile, perhaps I’ll change my training to 17 and 1…

On Sunday I didn’t do my normal 1 hour of walking with the dog for cross training. A couple of reasons for this, the first of which was that I was pretty tired. Besides, I think the 10 Km or so of skating that I did after my run the night before should count for something. The other reason I didn’t do the hour of walking is because Ellie’s foot always seems to bother her after our hour long walks. She’s got a cut or something on one of her pads. We did go to the park, but only for 25 minutes or so…

All in all, week 5 was a success.
