Giant Vacuum

I was watching a program on Discovery the other day where they were doing some excavation work. I noticed that it seemed to be a very labour intensive task. They were shoveling sand into wheelbarrows and carting it away.

I thought to myself, “Why don’t they use a giant vacuum type thing to suck up the sand and blow it to another location. I thought the vacuum would be great because then there wouldn’t be any danger of destroying the ruins with a shovel by accident.

Anyways, just curious why a giant vacuum isn’t being used in the excavation of ruins, especially in a desert setting…
