In the Zone

Wow! Did I ever get into the zone at the end of tonight’s run. It was just a short 5 miles, but by the time I got to 4 I was contemplating a walking break. However, instead of taking a break, I tried something else. I picked a point straight ahead and ran towards it while counting down the time I had left to run – 8 minutes and 34 seconds or 514 seconds. It was amazing – rather than thinking about how tired I was or maybe how much I wanted a break, I totally zoned out and just ran. I think I could have easily tacked on a couple more miles before taking a break. I’ll have to see if I can do that for my long run on Saturday… [...]

no more eMacs?

Was just perusing the online Apple store and noticed that they didn’t seem to be selling eMacs any more. I guess there is no cheaper alternative to the iMac when it comes to an all-in-one computer these days. Sure you can get an mac mini, but then you also have to get your self a monitor… [...]

San Francisco Bay Tour

Wow! What a great flight! I am so glad that Andy suggested we do it. After a short drive up highway 101 to the flying club (Diamond Aviation) we took off from the San Carlos airport which is just south of San Francisco and flew past SFO and then over San Fransciso. We saw all the sites you would expect to see – the tall skyscrapers (none of which I can remember the name), Alcatraz (aka The Rock), and the Golden Gate Bridge (as well as the Bay Bridge and that other bridge). [...]

Monterey Aquarium

We made it up to the Monterey Aquarium on Friday as we had hoped to. The weather was quite crappy for the entire morning so it was good to be inside. By the afternoon though it had cleared up and we got to enjoy a bit of sunshine.

The aquarium was pretty spectacular. It was large and we only spent a few hours there so we didn’t get to see everything, but I think we saw most of the main attractions. One of my favourite things was the jellyfish. [...]

Drive up the coast

I got started later than I wanted to yesterday – I left Long Beach at 1000 instead of 0900 like I originally planned. Then my planned route to get to Hwy 1 took me longer than I thought it would so the end result of all that was that I didn’t make it to Andy and Irene Anne’s place until 2000 – a full 10 hour trip. The drive was great! There were parts of it that weren’t anything to write home about, but the 100 miles or so south of Monterey were fantastic! Typical mountain roads – just like the roads through the mountains in NZ. I loved it! As for today – Andy keeps telling me that this is the first day it’s rained since he moved here. [...]

Mid-week Run

I skipped my Tuesday run this week because my lower back has really been bothering me. I was thinking about skipping tonight’s run as well (because my back hasen’t really gotten any better) but decided that it would be a bad idea. I did the run, 5 miles, in just under 45 minutes tonight. My back didn’t bother me at all during the run (it never does) but I’m thinking it may bother me tomorrow during the 8 to 10 hour drive I have ahead of me. Time will tell… [...]

I just saw a guy get shot!

This is the second police chase I’ve seen on the news now in two days. I didn’t see how the one last night ended, I opted to go to sleep instead, but tonight – I saw the guy get shot! How crazy is that?! Looked like the guy had a gun – so I don’t blame the cop for shooting him at all, but it was crazy that it happened on the news! Not too sure where this is, but it’s somewhere near Disney Land close to the 22 Fwy in Orange County. [...]

Congratulations to the Lawsons!

I haven’t really got many details, but I wanted to throw out some congratulations to Grant and Bonnie on the birth of their new daughter – who, at the time of this post (to my knowledge), has yet to be named. She was born at 0315 EST and weighed in at just over 6 lbs. More details and perhaps a few photos when I get them. Congrats you two! Sorry I couldn’t be there… :( UPDATE: They’ve named her Natasha. [...]

I miss my co-pilot!

I’ve been doing a lot of driving lately and I’ve had to find my own way. That’s not a problem, Google Maps has been a HUGE help of course and I haven’t gotten lost or anything, but I miss my co-pilot! Of course it’s not just when I’m driving that I miss her, but that should go without saying. I took a trip up to Pasadena today for a little shopping. What’s that you say? Did you hear me correctly? Yes – I went shopping. It wasn’t a long trip, I think I may have been in the store for 15 minutes, but it had to be done. Kind of funny, about a four hour trip (there and back) to do 15 minutes of shopping. [...]

Another Long Beach Run

Got up late today, after staying up a bit late last night. Wasn’t really looking forward to the run I had to do today, which is maybe why it didn’t go so well I attempted to follow the route that I had marked out last night on Wayfaring but things never quite work out as you plan them so there were a few changes made on the fly. Here is the actual route that I ran. As you can see, I’m 0.05 miles short of 9, but I’m not too broken up about that. As I allued to, the run was far from perfect. I didn’t feel good about it from the get go and things didn’t really get any better. It is HOT here today, my guess would be about 30 degrees. I used to think that high humidity was brutal (and still do actually) but let me tell you, really dry conditions (like 7% relative humidity) takes it’s toll on you too. When I made it to the half way mark of my run, I ended up walking for like 5 minutes! And from then on, things were tough, but I pushed my way through it and I’m glad I did. Final time was an hour and a half – 90 minutes or 10 minutes per mile. [...]
