Marathon training – week 7

Week 6: Mon – rest, Tues – 3, Wed – 6, Thurs – 3, Fri – rest, Sat – cross, Sun – 12 Well as you can see, I moved my long run to Sunday this week. I ended up having a few beers on Friday night, and then a few more beers on Saturday so I didn’t really feel like running on Saturday. I feel like my body has been taking a real beating in the last seven weeks. It’s likely a combination of the training and not eating that great, plus running on crappy old sneakers. I think I’ll buy a new pair before my next long run. The run I did yesterday was without a doubt the toughest run I’ve done yet. It’s weired because I don’t remember having that much trouble with the 10 miles I did a couple of weeks ago. [...]

Bob’s Lake

A friend of ours invited us out to their cottage for the day on Saturday for some winter fun. They own a couple of snowmobiles and their cottage is on a lake. The name of the lake is Bob’s Lake and it’s located about 25 minutes outside of Perth, to the west I believe, but I’d have to check a map to be sure of that. Jim tells me that Bob’s Lake is part of the rideau canal system, in that the canal draws water from the lake during the summer. Jim says that the level of the lake fluctuates as much as 6 or 7 feet over the summer. We got to the cottage sometime after 2 pm. It had been an absolutely beautiful day up to that point, but when we got to the cottage, it had just started to snow. Don’t get me wrong though, the snow didn’t make the day any less great. [...]

Marathon training – week 6

Week 6: Mon – rest, Tues – 3, Wed – 5, Thurs – 3, Fri – rest, Sat – 7, Sun – cross A relatively easy week really. I was glad for the stepback on Saturday though. I normally do my runs in the evenings, but this Saturday I did my long run in the early afternoon. I had eaten lunch at around noon or so and didn’t start my run until about twenty after one so I figured I’d be ok. Well, I’m not sure if it was because I ran too soon after eating or what, but about a mile into the run I was hurting (my stomache anyways). I finished up the run but never really felt much better for the rest of the day. In fact I ended up going to bed early (around 2230) on a Saturday night when the wife was away. :) [...]

To Maniwaki and back

Wow! What a perfect VFR day today! Clear blue skies and zero wind! Andy had booked CVO for us from 1100-1530, plenty of time to get to Maniwaki and back. We showed up at the club right around 1100 but the plane was taxiing out to runway 22. We got some story about the battery being dead and someone was taking it up for a spin to recharge the battery. When it got back (probably around 1140 or so) a whole pile of people got out of it so who knows if that story was true… (I suppose they could have just went along for the ride, but then why were they getting their picture taken with the plane afterwards?) [...]

Checkout on CVO

So Andy booked CVO for our flight on Sunday, the one plane in the fleet of 172s that I haven’t been checked out on. Well actually there is another 172 that I haven’t been checked out on yet, BOF, but neither has Andy so… Anyways, that was the only plane that was available so he booked it. That meant that I had to get myself checked out on it before Sunday. I checked the schedule and found a slot with Brad for Friday (today). I was a little skeptical about the weather cooperating but in the end it was ok. The wind was strong, no doubt about that, but not a problem. We took off on 22 but I opted to land 32 cause the wind was strong and gusting and coming from 300 degrees. [...]

Marathon training – week 5

Week 5: Mon – rest, Tues – 3, Wed – 5, Thurs – 3, Fri – rest, Sat – 10, Sun – cross Not a bad week overall. I didn’t have any trouble with the weekday runs, in fact I’ve been speeding up my week day runs for the past couple of weeks. As for the run on Saturday, it wasn’t too bad. My first double digit workout so to speak, but I felt pretty good afterwards. I also did it at a faster pace than I normally do the long runs. And to top it off, Amy and I went skating on the canal after my run too. I changed my routine somewhat, after talking with my brother a while back. He mentioned something to me about 10 and 1, meaning he runs for 10 minutes and then walks for 1. I modified that somewhat and ran for 20 and then walked for 1 (actually probably closer to 19 and 1 but…), which was slightly different than my 20 and 0.5 I’ve been doing. That extra 30 seconds seems to really make a difference. [...]

My First Passenger

I finally got to take up my first passenger yesterday. I’ve been waiting to take Amy up for a few weeks now, but we finally made it. I had COH booked for 1400, and I showed up a bit early to discuss the flying club’s phone system with Andrew. Well, 1400 came and went and COH was nowhere to be found. Eventually, the person who had it booked for the time slot just before me brought it back, 20 minutes late. No apology, nothing…I wont mention who it was. Anyways, after having a bit of trouble getting the plane started (thanks for the help Dave) we were eventually on our way. My plan was to fly over Stittsville to check out our house and the dog park and then fly over Richmond so Amy could get a look at JK and Dana’s place. I figure we got about half way to Stittsville, perhaps a little more (it was actually very close to the Corel centre) and I noticed it was snowing pretty good. Seeing as I haven’t done a lot of flying in the snow, and I didn’t know if it was just a temporary thing, I opted to turn around and head back. [...]

172 Checkout done

Well thanks to John and Grant I managed to get my 172 checkout done this past Saturday. They thankfully volunteered to act as guinee pigs for my load test. The load test is just so you get a feel for how the plane handles under a different load and C of G. We went out to the practice area and did a couple of steep turns and then headed over to Carp for a touch and go. It was quite busy at carp at the time, including a helicopter which was hovering around. After the touch and go (or as Brad called it, the bouce and go) at Carp, we headed back to Ottawa and did a few more touch and gos. Unfortunately on the final approach which was supposed to be the full stop, we didn’t get clearance to land because of some guy yapping away to the tower so we had to overshoot and try it again. That was about the most eventful thing that happened during the flight. Oh and the fact that there seemed to be a problem with the jacks in the back of the plane and so Grant and John could only hear about half of what was being said. [...]

Marathon training – week 4

Week 4: Mon – rest, Tues – 3, Wed – 4, Thurs – 3, Fri – rest, Sat – 9, Sun – cross I’m not gonna lie – the 9 mile run on Saturday was relatively tough. I was doing pretty good until about mile 7, then my left knee started bothering me. The last 1/4 mile was tough, but I managed it. I stuck with my plan of taking a 30 second waking break after every 2 miles. My reasoning for this is that for the marathon there is a water station every 3 kms (which is approximately 2 miles) and so I plan to walk through each water station. It took me 90:45 to do the 9 miles on Saturday. I actually felt ok afterwards, but like I said, my left knee was bothering me a bit. Even today, as I write this, my left knee is a little stiff. Kind of feels like I banged it or something. Hopefully by Tuesday it’ll be feeling better. [...]
