Posted by Kevin, on January 31st, 2005 Here was week 3′s schedule: Mon – rest, Tues – 3, Wed – 4, Thurs – 3, Fri – rest, Sat – 5, Sun – cross I actually found week 3 to be a pretty easy week. As you can see, the mileage went up on Wednesday, to 4, but since it was the third week of the program, the mileage on Saturday went down to 5. Every third week is a ‘stepback’ week. I think this coming week is gonna be a tough one, not the midweek runs, but the Saturday run is going to be brutal I think. It’s 9 miles! [...]
Posted by Kevin, on January 30th, 2005 I was watching a program on Discovery the other day where they were doing some excavation work. I noticed that it seemed to be a very labour intensive task. They were shoveling sand into wheelbarrows and carting it away. I thought to myself, “Why don’t they use a giant vacuum type thing to suck up the sand and blow it to another location. I thought the vacuum would be great because then there wouldn’t be any danger of destroying the ruins with a shovel by accident. Anyways, just curious why a giant vacuum isn’t being used in the excavation of ruin [...]
Posted by Kevin, on January 24th, 2005 Since passing my flight test way back on December 6th, I haven’t been flying. It was a combination of a lot of things – weather, Christmas, other committments, but mostly it was because I’m out of money. :) Luckily, I have some pretty fantastic friends who all gave me money for my birthday so I could afford to go flying again. You guys are the best! The club has a rule that in order to be ‘current’ you have to have flown in the past 30 days. If you go past that then you need to go up with an instructor to renew your currency. Actually it’s 30 days until you have 100 hours of PIC time and then 60 days after that. I’m obviously in the less than 100 hours of PIC category so… [...]
Posted by Kevin, on January 24th, 2005 I’m a little disappointed after completing week 2. Here was the schedule: Mon – rest, Tues – 3, Wed – 3, Thurs – 3, Fri – rest, Sat – 7, Sun – cross I don’t know why – but this week seemed much more difficult than last week. It was the same distances as last week, except for Saturday, but I had a harder time with it. The run on Saturday was particularily gruelling this week. Whereas last Saturday I didn’t have any trouble running the 6 miles (I did it in just under 58 mins), the 7 miles I did on Saturday of this week were absolutely brutal! I felt like I struggled to get to 5 miles and then REALLY struggled to finish up the 7 miles. I think it took me somewhere around 73 minutes. After the running was done, I kept walking to cool down and ended up doing around 8 and a half miles total. [...]
Posted by Kevin, on January 17th, 2005 Wow…I haven’t posted in weeks and today I’m posting twice! I decided late last year that since I was turning 30 this year, that I’d like to run a marathon to prove to myself that I’m still in somewhat decent shape, or at least that I have the ability to get in shape if needed. As motivation, I asked my brother Sean if he’d like to do the marathon with me. He said that he had been thinking of doing a full marathon this year since he did a half marathon last year so he was in. With that motivation in place, I next had to figure out how to go about the training. I knew that my friend Steve had run a marathon last year, so I asked him what he did for training. He gladly sent me a link to Hal Higdon’s Marathon Training Guide which he used last year. He also told me that he trained using the Intermediate I schedule. He also happened to mention that his time for the marathon was 3:46.49 so that answered my next question – what time to strive for. I mean come on…I’m not about to be shown up by Steve! ;) [...]
Posted by Kevin, on January 17th, 2005 Well it’s been forever since I last posted about anything so I figured I’d write up a quick one about turning 30. My birthday was last week and we had a party at my place. As usual, I got to share my party with Grant. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bitter about having to share my party, on the contrary…that crazy Lawson always tends to get things going! The party was awesome! The best part was that 11 people decided to spend the night at our place way out in Outer Mongolia! The next morning we all got up and went out for breakfast. I really enjoyed myself. Getting out of bed after you turn 30 isn’t as bad as some (Grant) would want you to believe. Even with a hangover, I mananged to get up by 10 am after going to bed at 4:30. :) [...]
