Layout For Life

Just got back from Layout for Life, a charity Ultimate tournament here in town. Well technically not ‘in town’, but it was at the main site we use so…

Our team, DBD (Death Before Depends), did very well. Manny organized the team and up to the last minute we weren’t sure if we were going to have enough women. But, before the start of our first game, we had three. And…the three we did have were absolutely AMAZING! We had Erin Huck from Stella, Julie Norton (also played on Stella at some point), and Deb Murphy who plays with Dame Edna. After our second game, a fourth girl also showed up, her name was Katie.

There were only five teams in the ‘Elite’ division, so we just played each of the other 4 teams and that was it. We were the lucky team who got to play 4 games in a row (80 minute games) and had our bye for the last time slot. I actually preferred that to be honest.

We won our first game quite handily, something like 13 – 5. Our second game wasn’t as successful. The score was 6 – 5 (for them) after softcap and then when the final horn went, we thought we were supposed to play out the point, so we did and ended at a tie, 6 – 6. Turns out that was wrong and they ended up winning 6 – 5. Our third game was against the only co-ed travelling team here in Ottawa. We beat them 13 – 7! Sweet stuff. Our last game was against a travelling team from Montreal, IAX. We were down 8-4 at half, but came back to win it 9-8 at time cap. I should note that we picked up DJ for our last game and he made a big difference.

So, in my opinion, we were the winners of the Elite division with a record of 3 and 1. There was another team with the same record, IAX, but since we beat them, I consider us the winners. :) Funny thing is, our only loss, was to a team that got beat by the other teams we beat.

All in all not a bad day for a bunch of pick-ups. It was quite windy all day and I was happy to be playing Ultimate rather than trying to do crosswind landings at the airport! I re-inforced my thoughts that I am WAY out of shape, but I think I did myself some good today. Unfortunately I also did myself a little bit of harm too. I managed to jam three of my fingers into the ground on a layout D bid. I iced them and that helped, but they are still hurting now. Advil also helped. Hopefully they’ll feel better tomorrow.
