First game of the season

We had our first Ultimate game of the season last night. To be honest, I was kind of dreading it all day. I knew I was going to be hurting since I’ve been sitting on my ass all winter / spring.

Luckily our game was out at UPI which always makes for a much nicer game…the fields are soo nice out there! Anyways, I got there early (as usual) and was carpooling with Darcy so I had someone to throw with for a change. The weird thing was, when we got there, there were a bunch of cars lined up along the side of the road by the entrance. Apparently the code didn’t work on the lock. Eventually someone figured out that the lock on the other gate would open so we all piled in that way.

One of our new girls showed up quite early too, her name was Marta. Marta told us that she haden’t played in 3 years so she was a little worried. Well she had nothing to worry about, she was fantastic! That’s always a nice surprise. Our other two girls were equally fantastic (Loraine and Sylvie) so I think we’re in pretty good shape this year. Loraine was only subbing but we’re hoping she gets out for more games with us.

Anyways, eventually everyone showed up, except for Jan Calnan, but don’t even get me started on her! We were playing a team named ‘Carpe Disc’ who we had played quite a few times in the past. Unfortunately we didn’t get organized until the second half of the game and well, we lost 13-7 at time cap. I like to think if we had more time we would have come back. ;) It didn’t help that the ladies were playing iron-woman but enough with the excuses…

One of the highlights of the game was one point where I was playing deep in a zone and well…I let someone behind me, a throw came deep, I jumped (not nearly as high as I thought I would :) ) and the disc went right over me and the guy caught it for a point. That was motivation enough for me to get back in shape!

Anyways…we don’t play again for two weeks (next Monday is a stat holiday) so in theory I should have a bit of time to at least start getting in shape.

There is a beautiful contrast here against the VUL, Vancouver Ultimate League, (Boris can back me up here).
    1) We almost always play double headers (Boris’ yelp of – “What do you mean the second game” – on the first night of the year was a beauty)
    2) The traditional stuck in traffic 6:20pm start of the 6pm game and the 7:45′ish start of the 7:30 game. Then play until too dark to see where you put your bags.
    3) Iron Women rock, but they don’t stay with a team long if they don’t get subs :\
