More time in the circuit

Another beautiful day today. I think the temperature went up to around 24 today. It was a bit breezy this morning, but by the time 5 o’clock rolled around the wind wasn’t that bad.

Got a plane (XAM) and did my walk around. Then called Montreal for a transponder code. It was kind of funny, I called, said that I wanted to get a transponder code so the guy said, “Go ahead”. To which I responded, “What would you like to know?” :) He expected I would give him the type and registration of the plane, where I was departing from, and where I was flying to. Oh and also when I was leaving. Next time they wont have to ask.

The wind was a bit wonky, kind of all over the place. Started out kind of coming right down the pipe, but by the time we were done our run up and ready to take off, it was much more of a cross wind.

Completed one circuit, but on the second one I had to do my first overshoot. Good to see how that works. Basically just hold your altitude over the runway and then start climbing at the end. Get yourself back into the circuit and land the damn plane the next time!

After the overshoot the tower switched runways on us, which meant we had to basically turn around and land on 04 instead of 22. Instead of just asking us to do a 360 he sent us out towards Champlain Bridge and then got us to turn around.

We did a few more left hand circuits and I got to see some landings with flaps, we did one with 20 degrees and two with 40 degrees. Why? Cause I was too high a bunch of times. :) I think towards the end of it I was feeling a bit better about the landings, but I didn’t really feel like I accomplished much today.

More of the same next time…which is scheduled for Sunday, but I think it might rain.

Get used to it Kev, you will be doing a lot more circuits before you’ve got your license. Not only do they give you practice in your takeoffs and landings, but you are also hammering the fundamentals of airport procedures into your head. The rules are the same at every airport in North America, and if you can get comfortable flying around CYOW, you’ll be able to fly pretty much anywhere.

The circuit is the last major piece before your first solo! Have fun!
