Posted by Kevin, on May 31st, 2004 Just got an email from Andy that his new baby girl, Stella Irene, was born on the weekend, Saturday, May 29th to be more precise. She was born a bit early but to quote Andy, “she’s healthy, happy, and very beautiful.” Irene-Ann is doing well too. Congratulations to Andy and Irene-Ann! He’s got some pictures up on his gallery. Posted by Kevin, on May 30th, 2004 Well I think I finally figured it out…how to do a crosswind landing that is. Brad seems to agree with me, since he signed that off in my PTR. Now all that is left to do is head back out to the practice area for Stalls / Spins / Sprials and then I’ll be signed off for solo in the circuit! I also wrote my Radio Operator’s Restricted Certificate test today. I think I got 4 wrong out of 25, so that would be 84% which I think is good enough. I’ve already looked up the answers to the ones I got wrong so I wouldn’t get them wrong again. There was one I couldn’t find though. What the heck is the other emergency frequency? The choices were 243 MHz, 300 MhZ, 500 Mhz and 122.8 MHz. I guessed 243 MHz, but for no real reason. I thought the AIP would shed some light on the question but alas…I couldn’t find it in there either. Andy, any idea? [...]
Posted by Kevin, on May 29th, 2004 Just got back from Layout for Life, a charity Ultimate tournament here in town. Well technically not ‘in town’, but it was at the main site we use so… Our team, DBD (Death Before Depends), did very well. Manny organized the team and up to the last minute we weren’t sure if we were going to have enough women. But, before the start of our first game, we had three. And…the three we did have were absolutely AMAZING! We had Erin Huck from Stella, Julie Norton (also played on Stella at some point), and Deb Murphy who plays with Dame Edna. After our second game, a fourth girl also showed up, her name was Katie. [...]
Posted by Kevin, on May 28th, 2004 ARGH! Today’s flying lesson was brutal! I had spent the day very happy because I was finally going to get some crosswind landing practice. But by the end of my lesson, I was SUPER bummed out. When I got to the club I could see it was very windy. Went inside and checked the Nav Canada site. It was saying 16 gusting 23 Kts at nearly 90 degrees to the runway we normally use. Brad came up with an alternate plan, we’d fly out to Gatineau and practice on that runway, since the heading of that one is slightly different than the one at the Ottawa Airport. Cool. We took off from one of the big runways and turned right to head towards Gatineau. We passed over Rockcliff and into Gatineau. The circuit height for the Gatineau strip is only 1200 feet as opposed to the 1500 foot circuit altitude for the Ottawa airport. That was a little freaky, it always felt like we were so low! [...]
Posted by Kevin, on May 27th, 2004 Amy and I decided that in order to get rid of the big dead grass spot (where we let Ellie pee all winter) we would rip up the grass, put in a small retaining wall, fill it with soil and plant some shrubs. Take a look at the finished product. Since I still haven’t been able to get the damn image module to work for me, I’ll have to use images from my gallery.

Posted by Kevin, on May 27th, 2004 Had my first ground school class last night. It was relatively boring to be honest. I didn’t learn anything new, mostly because we’ve already gone though everything in the first class during my first few flying lessons. I think there is one other guy in my class (of 14) who has done any real lessons. He’s got 7 hours I think. Half of the class has done an intro flight, the other half, nothing. I’m very glad that I started my flight training way before starting the ground school. It would have been a lot of reading starting both of them at the same time. Oh and my flying lesson last night got cancelled because the damn wind was light and right down the runway! [...]
Posted by Kevin, on May 26th, 2004 Well I’ve been slacking off and not writing anything about my last couple of flying lessons. I had one last Friday, the 21st and then another one on Sunday, the 23rd. Both lessons were just more flying the circuit and working on landings. Both days the wind was pretty much non existant and what wind was present was coming right down the runway so once again, no crosswind landing practice. ARGH! On Sunday, since the wind wasn’t what we were looking for and since I really wanted to fly anyways, Brad decided that we would work on fixing a bad landing, if it were to happen. This isn’t typically part of the training, but since we weren’t getting the crosswinds we were hoping for, he wanted to keep it interesting. [...]
Posted by Kevin, on May 20th, 2004 This is two days in a row now that I’ve had to power cycle my router in order to get it working again. Not sure what is going on with it. If this keeps up, the first thing I’ll do is upgrade the firmware and if that doesn’t do the trick…I’ll have to bite the bullet and buy a new one I guess. :( It’s a Netgear RP614. The strange thing is that I haven’t had ANY problems with since I installed it back in October. Nothing has changed in my network recently so this is all rather bizarre. Actually…I was just surfing through the Netgear Support page for my router and found new firmware that just may solve my problem. [...]
Posted by Kevin, on May 18th, 2004 We had our first Ultimate game of the season last night. To be honest, I was kind of dreading it all day. I knew I was going to be hurting since I’ve been sitting on my ass all winter / spring. Luckily our game was out at UPI which always makes for a much nicer game…the fields are soo nice out there! Anyways, I got there early (as usual) and was carpooling with Darcy so I had someone to throw with for a change. The weird thing was, when we got there, there were a bunch of cars lined up along the side of the road by the entrance. Apparently the code didn’t work on the lock. Eventually someone figured out that the lock on the other gate would open so we all piled in that way. [...]
Posted by Kevin, on May 18th, 2004 Dave wrote (quite a while ago too) how he ranks on this top 50 list. I only found this today when checking out Boris’ site because someone had commented on it. I thought it sounded like fun, so I’m posting the list here too. :)
